Christian, Muslim and Jewish HAND IN HAND students were invited by Mayor Nir Barakat to personally welcome Pope Francis as he arrived in Jerusalem this week.

“Our school was chosen to welcome the Pope because we are the only school in Jerusalem that includes the diversity of faiths,” said teacher and vice principal, Widad Naoum.

Children from the middle school exchanged words with the Pope and presented him with a basket of fruit and a plate of earth from Jerusalem.

“I was surprised by the warmth and softness in his voice,” said a 6th grader named Gil. “The Pope is here to help us, hoping that religion might step in where the negotiations failed.”

Hand in Hand is a center for Jewish-Arab education in Israel and is proudly supported instant laons by the Sabrina Merage Foundation.
